We know that, as Christians, our ultimate calling is to bring others into a relationship with God. It sounds hard and nearly impossible in today's world. Many of us struggle for a long time to figure out just how we might accomplish this. We can go our entire lives searching, especially when we don't think our personal interests have anything to do with it. However, God placed those interests and passions on our hearts Himself. When we start to understand that a little deeper, we'll realize there are many ways to accomplish our high calling.
For me, my path is the written word. I have always loved pretending, storytelling, and reading. I have writing skills. I've been told I'm good at it, and I've got ideas coming out of my ears. But how can I use this passion for writing to expand God's kingdom and encourage others to believe?
It's simple, really. I can write God-honoring books that pull people in with their intense plots but don't lead them astray. My stories can be gritty and raw but they don't have to promote immoral behavior. I can create characters who struggle with faith or making good choices, but learn something important that changes their lives by the conclusion. I don't have to add to the noise of the secular world. Instead, I can increase the good. With some of my fiction projects, I let my writing go astray and it made me feel icky. I rewrote and revised it and decided I couldn't write that way. I can't include things I disagree with in my books.
This lesson really hit home when I started my forthcoming book: The Writer's Faith Companion: A 30-Day Guide to Exploring God's Book While Planning Yours. It's a Bible scavenger hunt of sorts that prompts writers to find encouraging verses, focuses their purpose, and helps them plot their stories. The more I worked on it and searched the Bible, the stronger my resolve to write faithful fiction became and the more I understood just how much the writing world could use a Christian-inspired writing craft book. This book doesn't tell you that you have to write Christian fiction, but it can help you decide what kind of stories and details you do want to use in your books.
This book was a passion project that has helped me grow personally and changed how I look at my stories. It reminded me that I am a representative of God and how I present myself through my writing is important. It has helped me focus on my purpose and calling, and I can only thank God for that. He guided me every step of the way.
The Writer's Faith Companion releases on September 10, 2024.

"This book has been one of the BEST books I’ve read all year. Ella’s knowledge of Biblical Motherhood has convicted me to be a mother built on Biblical truth, not worldly lies. I’ve taken her wisdom and applied it to my every day life and have noticeably seen the difference in my life, but also my children’s and husbands life. This book has been a blessing to my family and I will recommend it to every mother I know." - Alysa
