Is Paul Legalistic?

Ella Rose Roussel

Before we unpack this question, let's first look at what legalistic means. In Christian theology, "legalism" is the idea that a person earns salvation by doing good works or obeying the law. This, if true, would essentially render the sacrifice of Jesus Christ unnecessary, as we would be able to save ourselves through our own actions. Paul is often the cause of much debate and the frequent go-to for matters on salvation and works.

Why Paul is Taken Out of Context

Paul is often taken out of context. The way he explains things when you read a full letter in one sitting, would be considered convoluted. The truth is, he was cautious in explaining every point he made. To try to avoid confusion he used many examples. Paul was a thinker and very clearly the type of person who took responsibility seriously. I feel a connection and understanding of Paul. As I read his letters over and over again, I find his ways of speaking similar to my husband's. I often get frustrated with the way my husband speaks for the same reason so many people have been able to take Paul out of context. If my husband was to write out his thoughts, I believe I would have to re-read and read again to fully understand and see what he is talking about sometimes. Not because he lacks knowledge or the ability to explain but because the directness is overshadowed by a desire to make sure people do understand, which ironically causes people to become confused. They do explain and make precise points but the listener or reader needs to pay attention and focus on what is actually being said.

The primary issue with Paul's letters lies not in the letters themselves, but in the way they are often read today. Instead of reading a full letter at a time, as they were intended to be read, people often read a chapter here or a verse there and believe they have the full context. However, to truly understand any section of the letter, one must read the full letter. I can confidently say this because I wrote an entire book inspired by one of his letters, 'Becoming a Titus 2 Mother.'

So is Paul Legalist?

The answer is simple NO.

Here is the proof

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:8-10 KJV.

Final Thoughts

I could share more examples and verses but I want to urge you to read the letter for yourself in one sitting, as it was written to be read. Take your time, and perhaps have someone with you; this way, you can discuss the content afterward. You could then go on to read his other letters, a letter at a time and with a friend, preferably your husband. I am writing this bacause I feel that Paul himself would be horrified if he knew he was being taken out of context and misrepresented. I am writing this to speak for him because he can't speak for himself, in todays unfocused world. If you read devotionals or use Bible studies to read the Bible, take this as a sign to take a break and instead read your Bible.

"This book has been one of the BEST books I’ve read all year. Ella’s knowledge of Biblical Motherhood has convicted me to be a mother built on Biblical truth, not worldly lies. I’ve taken her wisdom and applied it to my every day life and have noticeably seen the difference in my life, but also my children’s and husbands life. This book has been a blessing to my family and I will recommend it to every mother I know." - Alysa
